Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Recycles EPS

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is always looking to be greener and recycle more materials from their production site in Chichester. Recently, Biffa, the company’s waste contractor, set up an EPS (expanded polystyrene) recycling scheme.

styromeltCarl Payne, Biffa operations manager, explains: “Rolls-Royce Motor Cars use around 20-40 large polystyrene trays a week to protect the front grill sections of the Phantom and other chrome parts.

“We have set up an excellent way for Rolls-Royce to recycle this polystyrene. We installed a Styromelt machine; this melts the polystyrene to form a dense block of material that is reduced in volume by over 95% of the original size. A two cubic metre load of polystyrene comes out of the machine as a small block of 90cm x 25cm x 5cm.”

The blocks of melted EPS produced at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars are stored and sold to Robust Ltd, a recycler based in South Wales, who turns them into new products such as garden decking.

“Our main objectives are to divert waste from landfill and reduce cost. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars expects to save £2000 - £3000 each year by recycling this polystyrene,” says Carl.

“Another practical benefit of the recycling is that it has freed up a lot of space in the waste containers. We are reducing the volume of used polystyrene going to landfill and increasing the recycling rates — all good news for the environment.”

quoteRolls-Royce Motor Cars takes pride in its good environmental record, having achieved ISO 14001 certification in April 2003; the company has maintained this high standard ever since.

Waste management is an important process within Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. All waste is segregated using a number of ‘waste islands’ around the site and a dedicated ‘Recycling Centre’ sorts and bales all recyclable wastes.

The used polystyrene trays are collected daily and put into the Styromelt machine, once enough is in the machine it can be switched on and a cycle can be run. The resulting blocks are stored until they have enough to transport to the recycler.

“At a time when recycling, landfill and the environment are big on the agenda, we hope to make people realise that polystyrene can be recycled effectively,” concludes Carl.
