Manufacturing a Designer Chair for Exhibition in Trafalgar Square
The Toolmaker
John Hunt, Director, Mathers Engineering
“The tool was unusually large, but the thing that made it really different for us, was the fact that the final product was artistic and was going to be exhibited in Trafalgar Square — most of our tools are for engineering or packaging so the creative element was a first for us.
“The size of the tool determined the procedure we used to make the tool. We started by using the CAD design supplied to make a resin replica of the chair.
“Next, we sealed the replica and then layered it with sheets of glass fibre and then with layers of wood. Once we had the depth of material needed, we pulled out the resin model. What is left is the ‘reverse’ or ‘pattern’, we used that to make the aluminium casting that was the mould for the EPS chairs.
“It was quite a challenge, because of the size of the casting. We are pleased that the final product has been a success and that our tool helped to create the designer’s vision of the chair.”
