2004 EPS Packaging Recycling Figures
The EPS Packaging Group has contacted the 10 leading EPS recyclers in the UK to find out what levels of EPS recycling were achieved in 2004.
Damien Packer, Environmental Affairs Executive who conducted the research says: “All but one of the recyclers have helped by providing tonnage figures of their recycling
in 2004.
“From these we estimate that 6,000 tonnes of used EPS packaging was recycled in 2004. This is an excellent figure as it equals 26% of EPS packaging produced in the UK in 2004.
“European Directive 2004/12/EC states UK plastic recycling rates must be 22.5% by weight by Dec 31 2008 so the UK EPS packaging industry has already exceeded this.”
The EPS Packaging Group, which represents 85 per cent of the EPS packaging industry in the UK, sponsors a communications campaign to raise awareness of the recyclability of EPS and it provides advice and support to any business that is looking to set up a recycling scheme.
“We are very pleased with the figures,” says Damien. “But we won’t be resting on our laurels. Our aim is to keep increasing these figures year on year. As a single polymer, EPS packaging is easy and cost effective to recycle and it is a useful resource that UK plc should not be throwing away.”
The commitment of the EPS Packaging Group members to increasing recycling is demonstrated by the fact they have set up their own recycling point network for householders and small businesses in their local areas.
“Currently, Kay-Metzeler, LINPAC Moulded Foams, SCA Tuscarora, Springvale and Styropack have set up one, or more, local recycling points to collect post-consumer EPS and these are all on their own manufacturing sites,” explains Damien.
“We hope to set an example to Local Authorities. There is not a Council in the UK with a collection point for EPS at a Householder Recycling site. Even though some of our members have actually offered to collect the material from their local council site and recycle it.” |
