SCA Packaging Tuscarora donated expanded polystyrene blocks (EPS) to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to provide homes for the UK’s declining population of Willow Tits.
Willow Tits were once widespread over most of Great Britain. In the last 10 years, this species has dramatically declined by over 70%. The cause of this decline is unknown. However, a shortage of nest sites is thought to be a reason.
EPS provides a good alternative option for the birds’ nests, because they can excavate a hole in the EPS— exactly as they would in their natural habitat of dead trees.
In total, sixty nest boxes are being trialled in woodland and by reservoirs in Wiltshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Half of the nest boxes contained EPS blocks and half were filled with wood shavings.
Typically these birds take about three years before they will even approach a nest box, so the RSPB was delighted to report the highest success rate ever recorded. Especially as two of the EPS nest boxes contained large, healthy, well feathered clutches of baby birds!
None of the nest boxes with wood shavings were moved into. Demonstrating that for discerning Willow Tits, EPS is definitely the first choice….
