The EPS Packaging Group has appointed Damien Packer, as Environmental Affairs Executive. Damien is based at the British Plastics Federation HQ in London and is already working closely with packaging group members, customers and recyclers.

Since his appointment Damien has been making contact with customers and recyclers, finding out the issues that impact on them and gaining a thorough understanding of the EPS packaging industry.

“For many customers the outstanding performance and cost-effectiveness of EPS makes it their first practical choice. But, they might be concerned about inaccurate information or hearsay about its environmental performance.

“My role is to provide the facts about EPS; its recycling in the UK and the characteristics that make it safe-for-use in a variety of different situations,” says Damien Packer.

“EPS packaging makes a huge contribution to the economy of the UK in several ways. Its outstanding cushioning abilities help to reduce waste and returns by ensuring that fragile and high value products reach customers’ homes undamaged and in pristine condition.

“It plays a key support role to the fishing industry by guaranteeing that fish is kept fresh and safe to eat. Being 98 per cent air and extremely lightweight helps the environment by reducing fuel consumption.

“The familiar white EPS box is the unsung hero of many different sectors — manufacturing of brown and white goods, food and drink, pharmaceutical and horticultural.

“I intend to make sure that EPS is recognised for the key role it plays in the supply chain and that accurate facts about its environmental credentials are widely available.”
