Update EPS Recyclers:
Recycling Compacted EPS
If your business has used EPS, don't just send it to landfill — it can be recycled at no cost to you — one of these two companies could suit your requirements. You may even earn a small income to set against any costs that you could incur by establishing a recycling scheme.
Recycling compacted EPS
WES (Waste Exchange Services) Ltd was set up in 1990 to provide practical recycling support for industry and has been recycling plastics since February 1999. A recent move to larger premises at the 'Wilton International' site on Teesside has enabled WES to double its capacity and it now anticipates a throughput of 5,000 tonnes of plastic waste a year.
Bernard Chase, Commercial Manager at WES says: “As a result of these recent changes, we need more waste EPS. Our target is to increase throughput of EPS by an extra 70 tonnes a month. We are therefore looking for new partners.
“We would like to talk to anyone in the UK with used EPS to dispose of. At the moment we buy compacted EPS from half a dozen partners based in all corners of the UK — north, south, east and west — so geography is irrelevant.
“The most important factor, however, is that the material must be presented in a 'recycler-friendly' form. We will only accept compacted EPS blocks that are both neatly presented and completely free from contamination such as metal or wood.
“If the EPS waste is fish box material, we'll take it so long as it has been thoroughly cleaned before compaction. The onus is therefore on the supplier to ensure that only clean EPS is placed in the compactor. Provided compaction is done in a conscientious manner, an outlet for EPS waste is assured.
“We reprocess EPS waste into clean beads of recycled polystyrene compound. We can alter the characteristics of this recyclate in order to suit each client's particular requirements.
“We can increase the impact strength of the recycled polystyrene compound making it suitable for the more demanding moulding and sheet applications. Typical applications for our recycled polystyrene are wood substitute extruded profiles, extruded thermoform sheet and coat hanger mouldings.”
