Grants For EPS Recycling Equipment
South Wales Polystyrene (SWP) has been awarded a grant by Groundwork Wales to purchase a machine to compact the waste off cuts of expanded polystyrene (EPS) that result from its manufacturing processes.
SWP who cut block EPS into packaging products are compacting around half a tonne of waste EPS a day. Now all of this material is collected and paid for by a recycler instead of going into landfill.

Groundwork Wales helped SWP by providing a Clean Technology Grant under the Objective 1 scheme, which applies to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) — businesses employing less than 250 people — in Wales.
Groundwork has a national Environmental Business Services network which works with SMEs to help to improve their environmental performance.
Richard Walsh, Policy Coordinator — Business, Groundwork, explains: “We work regionally through our 50 local offices. Our business network is concentrated around the manufacturing areas of the North-West, South Wales, the West Midlands and the Leeds area.
“The grants that we are able to give are regionally-based. For example in South Wales we are able to give capital grants up to 30 per cent and consultancy up to 100 per cent. In other regions different grants are available.
“However, if you are an SME and you are keen to improve your environmental performance it is always worth contacting us to find out how we can help.”
Graham Middleton, Joint Managing Director, SWP is in no doubt of the benefits of working with Groundwork: “This grant has made a big difference to our operations.
“We're keen to do everything we can to lessen our impact on the environment.”
Andrew Barnetson, Environmental Affairs Manager, EPS Packaging Group, comments: “If you need financial support to help set up a scheme to recycle your EPS packaging then this is great news.
“We hope more companies will take advantage of grants from Groundwork and that they will contact us for information about EPS recyclers (see page 3 of this issue) and setting up schemes as we are keen to help manufacturers, waste managers and local authorities who wish to implement EPS recycling projects.”
