World’s First Arcel Recycling Scheme
Following over two years of arduous development work, SCA Tuscarora is recycling used Arcel, an EPS derivative, for TV tube manufacturer, Sony Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, using an extrusion process which results in a second generation plastic moulding.
In recognition of this work SCA Tuscarora was shortlisted for the Best Environmental Initiative Award in the Plastics Industry Awards 2003.
This successful recycling process is the first in the world for this material. Prior to this, Sony sent the material to landfill — now EPS News is pleased to report that over 250 tonnes of scrap has been recycled in the past six months. Sony Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, manufacturer of TV tubes based in Bridgend, South Wales, was experiencing difficulties with the disposal of Arcel trays used to transport TV Tubes.
SCA Tuscarora developed an alternative solution by investing in a waste management system; it has created major savings for Sony not only on disposal to landfill costs, but also on storage and logistics.
John Hoskins, General Manager (Procurement), of Sony Manufacturing (UK) Ltd said "The finished goods (Trinitron CRT's) produced by Sony in Bridgend require a durable packaging material with good shock absorbing qualities. On this basis Arcel was our first choice. However, end of life disposal was a big headache, landfill being the only option. As a result of the commitment, determination and no little investment by SCA Tuscarora, an environmentally acceptable method of recycling the packaging has been achieved".
This recycling system, located in Methyr Tydfill, was developed after many trials, brainstorming sessions and work with various professional organisations, including the Polymer Training Association.
