Reducing Contaminated Waste
A huge pile of used horticultural EPS packaging that was contaminated with soil, ivy and slugs and had been left untouched for at least ten years gave the EPS Packaging Group the opportunity to test the Taylor Thermal Densifier with some very challenging material.
"We had a call from a market gardener asking for assistance with disposing of some very old waste EPS boxes, so we asked Taylor Products if we could use this as an opportunity to see their densifier in action," explains Andrew Barnetson, Environmental Affairs Manager, EPS Packaging Group.
Taylor Products was keen to take on the challenge and agreed to drive from Cardiff with their small densifier in the back of a truck to demonstrate the capability of their machine.
"I was very impressed, the TP1000 Thermal Densifier took the contaminated material and reduced it to bricks that were five per cent of the original volume. It was completely unaffected by the contamination," says Barnetson.
The Taylor Products densifier does not crush or shred the material; it uses a thermal process so contaminates like food or soil do not damage the machine. It can be used for EPS, EPP and any other plastics to reduce the volume of a waste material so it can be economically transported to a recycler or to landfill.
Rob Higgins, Marketing Manager, Taylor Products told EPS News: "A forty-foot trailer load of EPS can be cut down to an amount that will fit into a 50 gallon oil drum.
"It is a machine that is easy-to-use and is very reliable. We are not actually burning the material, just heating it gently to its melting point so there are no dangerous emissions.
"Our densifiers can be used for any plastic material that needs to be reduced, each one is built on a modular basis to meet the requirements of the buyer.
"We recently supplied a machine to LG electronics to reduce their EPP prior to being transported to a recycler and they have been very pleased with the result."
