Building Racing Hovercrafts at School
Willesden High, a previously failing school in North West London, is raising morale, transferring skills and encouraging team work abilities by building three racing hovercrafts and it needs blocks of EPS to complete the task.
Dell Austin, Learning Mentor, at the school explains the reason for this unusual venture: "One of our main priorities was to raise the morale of the whole school and to show the children that they are capable of achieving anything if they put their minds to it."
The hovercrafts are being built by three teams; each team has eight pupils and one teacher and is designing and building a Hovercraft based on the Hovercraft Club of Great Britain designs. When the crafts are completed the school will race them in the British national schools league.
EPS is integral to the design, it is placed in the cockpit to provide buoyancy and Dell Austin is thrilled that Jack Acres of LINPAC Moulded Foams in Chichester has just offered to give the school the EPS they need — completely free of charge.
"This is great news, it means the students can finish their hovercrafts and get racing," says Dell Austin. "We have been building the crafts one at a time because we did not have room to build all three at once. It's been good because all the teams can work and learn at the same time.
"In fact, as we progressed in the build of the first hovercraft we could see room for improvement for the next one. When we started work on the second craft, we decided to make some interesting changes to the hull designs. As we continue to learn, perhaps the third craft will have even more modifications."
The first hovercraft is ready to have its EPS installed and now that the school has found a supplier they can't wait to get going and finish off their hovercrafts and test them out against the competition.
