EPS House for sale
A £350,00 house made entirely of expanded polystyrene went on sale in Billingham, Cleveland this April.
The Georgian-style house, a 6/7 bedroom property, in exclusive estate, Wynyard Woods, is a prefab. It boasts outstanding insulation and energy efficiency and generous interior space.
It is built in kit form in a factory at W A Browne Building Services, Billingham and can be erected on site within five days, compared to ten weeks for a traditional detached home.
Mr Browne, Chairman and MD of WA Browne, who has lived in a house made out of EPS for seven years, predicted: "In time, 20 per cent of houses will be made using the kit method. It is already very common in the US."
The house is being marketed by Bellway Homes, the UK's fifth largest housebuilder, Barry Miller of Bellway says: "We will test its marketability, the family who buy it will need to tell decide to go ahead with any more of these homes."
EPS sheets are fitted onto a lightweight steel frame and then coated with acrylic coating which makes it weatherproof and gives it an authentic Georgian plaster style.
Although is only the second house built from EPS, W A Browne has made commercial properties for clients like Tesco and ICI using this method.
