Recoup Conferences
Recoup, a leading plastics recycling organisation, staged a series of six conferences around the UK during March and April 2002.
The events were supported by WRAP (Waste Resource Action Programme), a government sponsored organisation which promotes the recycling of raw materials, and set out to fill a gap in information provision about plastics recycling.
The conferences, held at Glasgow, Bristol, Durham, Peterborough, Bolton and London, were all over-subscribed and were warmly received by the delegates.
Andrew Barnetson, EPS Packaging Group Environmental Affairs Manager, spoke at five of the events; his presentations outlined the extremely positive environmental message about EPS packaging — both the manufacturing process and its recycling record.
"These meetings were a very good opportunity to tell new audiences about the positive recycling opportunity that EPS packaging offers. Some of the Local Authority delegates were not aware of the many uses that recycled EPS can be put to.
"They were very interested to hear about replacement hardwood which can be used for park benches and beach huts and is made entirely from recycled polystyrene," says Andrew Barnetson.
The EPS Packaging Group also exhibited at the conferences. During the breaks in the presentations, Andrew was able to answer a number of serious enquiries: "Several delegates wanted to discuss setting up a recycling scheme, I hope one or more of these queries will lead to recycling action in the future".
Andrew Simmons, CEO of Recoup said: "Providing conferences of this type has enabled us to bring together experts in the field to provide genuine advice and guidance. "This is an excellent way to kick start the step-change required in the collection and recycling of plastics."
