School EPS Project

School children at the Newcastle-under-Lyme School have been enjoying a project that requires them to expand and mould EPS beads.

Lyn Field, Technician, explains: "The students first boil the beads in water for ten seconds. This process partially expands the beads. Then they put the beads into a ball shaped mould and boil the moulds in water for about ten minutes.

"When the mould has cooled they are left with a perfect expanded polystyrene ball. The children decorate the balls or build several into creatures or objects.

"All the students really enjoy this work — it is the highlight of the year. The project was also a popular attraction at our Science and Technology Fair when we open the school to visitors."

The beads are donated to the school by EPS Packaging Group member, Mondi Packaging Ltd, Mike Raw comments: "It is great to see the school working with EPS in such a practical way and developing such an enjoyable project for the children to work on.

"I hope it will lead to a greater understanding of what a useful and versatile material expanded polystyrene is. In future years the same children can learn all about its recycling too."
