BPF Keeps a Promise

At the British Plastics Federation (BPF) Annual Lunch on 10 October 2001, Richard Milner-Moore, President of the BPF reported that the BPF kept its promise to its membership and it has secured 57 new members. (Last year it promised to secure 50 new members in one year.)

Milner-Moore set the BPF a new target of attracting one new member a week for the forthcoming year. He asked if any company facing the challenges of the current climate could afford not to support their industry bodies particularly bearing in mind the packaging regulations and the incoming directives on ELV and WEEE.

Meeting with the DTI Minister

On 28 September 2001 Directors of seven plastics, rubber and associated machinery and tool making associations met DTI Minister, Lord Sainsbury. Discussions centred around the difficulties currently faced by these industries and the extra burden caused by the Climate Change Levy (CCL).

Lord Sainsbury stated that the effect of the CCL was marginal and that its impact was kept under review and he asked for robust figures on its impact. When asked for 100 per cent first year capital allowances on the purchase or leasing of plant and machinery, Lord Sainsbury noted the request and said that his department is already pressing the Treasury but he cautioned that definitions cannot be changed quickly.

Lord Sainsbury commented that the UK economy could not be insulated from major downturns in the US and Japan. He said that UK industry needed to be forward looking in its investment particularly in R&D, which is the route to higher value products.

Lord Sainsbury said he could not promise money but he wished to create the right environment for industry to make changes.
