Air Conditioning uses EPS

The UK's leading manufacturer of air conditioning equipment, IMI Air Conditioning Ltd, has utilised the strength without weight of Nova Chemicals’ Dytherm high density structural foam in the innovative design of both its 600 and new 875 ranges of ceiling-mounted cassettes.

"Cassettes are the fastest growing sector of the air conditioning market because of their aesthetics and the efficient use of space — particularly where floor and wall space is at a premium", explains Steve Chorley, Marketing Manager of IMI Air Conditioning.

IMI addressed the demand for increasingly smaller, lighter, less expensive ceiling units by exploiting the unique properties of Dytherm expandable beads. Dytherm foams are modified PP0®-EPS beads and like EPS, they offer excellent insulation making them an ideal for use in air conditioning components.

These specialised units are supplied by Rosslite Ltd, an EPS Packaging Group member, that manufactures the customised moulds, producing them alongside EPS Packaging products.

The innovative approach taken by IMI has a number of benefits, Steve Chorley explains : "Instead of a traditional steel chassis, which has nearly 30 separate components, IMI's cassettes incorporate a one-piece, fully removable Dytherm chassis.

"The result is lower material costs, faster assembly times and — since the Dytherm chassis reduces overall weight by up to 20 kg compared with other units of similar capacities — easier handling, installation and maintenance."
