Recycled polystyrene pencils star in the Millennium Dome

Visitors queuing for the Millennium Dome’s Living Island exhibition are being entertained by the spectacle of a polystyrene vending cup being turned into a pencil in front of their eyes.

The aptly named, Remarkable Pencils, are a vivid illustration of the exciting recycling potential of polystyrene. They are the brainchild of Edward Douglas-Miller who set up Remarkable Pencils Ltd in 1996 to develop and manufacture the pencils — the company is currently running its entire production facility inside the Millennium Dome.

The exhibit has given the whole recycling issue a boost: “The reaction of Dome visitors has been fantastic, more than we ever expected. People are fascinated by the direct link from the cup to the pencil and they are keen to support our work by buying the pencils,” says Evan Lewis of Remarkable Pencils Ltd.

“They understand this product helps to keep vending cups out of landfill and we are reducing the numbers of trees being cut down. The manufacturing process itself has a minimal impact on the environment, but it is those two key issues that have captured people’s imaginations.”

The Remarkable Pencils have already won Invention of the Year 1998 and Recycled Product of the Year 1999. The company is currently looking for a high street outlet for their products, so pencils made from recycled polystyrene cups will soon be available from a store near you.
