EPS News Interview - Derek Matthews

Derek Matthews is Strategic Purchasing Manager for B & W Loudspeakers in Worthing, Sussex. B&W is supplied with EPS packaging by Styropack (UK) Ltd.

B & W Loudspeakers export state-of-the-art loudspeakers for domestic and professional applications all over the world. Prices range from £150-£35,000 per pair. Well-known customers include the world-famous Abbey Road Recording Studios, the BBC and Deutsche Grammphon.

How important is packaging to B & W Loudspeakers?

Around 93% of our products are exported to over 70 different countries around the world. B & W is a premium brand and it is vital that when the customer unpacks their loudspeakers they are in mint condition. Packaging is the key to achieving this.

Why do you specify EPS packaging?

Once our loudspeakers leave our Worthing plant they are shipped or air freighted to a designated distributor in each country. From there they are transported to retailers or to customers. Each one undergoes a long journey with many possibilities for problems to arise. To date EPS has been particularly good at protecting the loudspeakers from damage or damp.

We’ve had situations where the cardboard box arrives damp and damaged but the EPS has protected the product.

Does EPS packaging offer value for money?

Yes, it is a cost-effective solution to our packaging challenge.

Have you considered other packaging materials?

Yes, we have looked into other materials. Our current position is that we are very satisfied with the job that EPS is doing.

Is EPS packaging convenient to use?

Yes, it is delivered daily to our Worthing plant and incorporated into the end of our production line.

Does EPS Packaging contribute to the presentation of your products?

Yes. It is very important to us that the packaging looks clean and fresh when the customer unpacks the loudspeakers. Even though the purchase will have already been made, we have to be sure that everything about the B & W brand is top quality. Dirty or scruffy packaging would not be consistent with our premium products.
