Growing Wings

An unusual use of expanded polystyrene is the innovative Ward Wings, a unique substrate (soil-free) growing system for strawberries that was developed by Robert Ward, in Telford, Shropshire.

"An EPS wing is used to provide support, drainage and thermal control", explains Robert Ward. "The key benefit of this is the ability to control the temperature around the root growth in hot weather.

"Strawberries suffer from thermo-dormancy — when the roots get too hot the stress stops the fruit from growing." The unique Ward Wings system allows the roots to be flushed with cooler water allowing healthy growth to continue.

The Ward Wings system has a UK and Benelux patent and was awarded Millennium Product accreditation by the British Council. It is the first all-in-one substrate growing system and Robert Ward has built a successful new business on his creative idea.

The EPS wings are supplied by LINPAC Moulded Foams and Robert Ward worked closely with the LINPAC team to develop a high-density, high quality product that growers can use again and again.
