EPS Products
An imaginative new product designed by John Myall and made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) is set to revolutionise winters for pond dwellers. Fish and frogs everywhere need no longer worry about cold spells and getting trapped under ice.
The Ice Guard is designed to maintain a permanent hole in a pond’s ice during prolonged periods of sub-zero temperatures. It is hollow and sits on the surface of the pond with a lower tube-like part seated permanently below the surface. It is manufactured from densely moulded EPS and has a substantial weighting mechanism to keep it stable.
The insulating qualities of the EPS keep the water inside the device above freezing temperature and allow the noxious gases created by plants, fish and frogs, to escape into the atmosphere. It works even in the most extreme weather conditions, ex-engineer, John Myall explains: “I tested the Ice Guard in Norway and at temperatures of -20°C it still performs efficiently.
“It is already very popular in America where more than 15,000 Ice Guards have already been installed in ponds. It is now available to UK gardeners who can buy the device through our web site www.greenideasltd.co.uk or find it in their local garden centre.”
Once in the pond the Ice Guard can remain there forever helping to preserve a healthy pond environment all year round. Winter is not the only time it is useful. During hot, dry periods a build up in gases can occur and the Ice Guard will perform the same useful function, allowing the pond to breathe and stay healthy.
An unexpected bonus is the Ice Guard has proved to be very attractive to frogs who enthusiastically colonise it. Myall says, “During trials we discovered that frogs love the Ice Guard and it has been nicknamed by some the ‘Frog House’ because they sit inside it for hours passing the time of day!”
