Developments in EPS – Skinning

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a versatile packaging material that can be modified to suit a wide range of industrial requirements.

Using a polystyrene sheet to encase standard EPS moulded foam in a hard-wearing skin is a good way of increasing the durability and extending the life of EPS packaging.

For the past three years Styropack UK, in Aberaman, S. Wales, has supplied Hoover with a skinned mould for its washing machine packaging.

"The cost and time benefits of using this skinned EPS mould are significant" says Rob Collins, Commodity Manager of Hoover. "Using this skinned EPS mould eases production flow. Logistically we save time too, as there is no multiple handling on line and this has given us the additional bonus of a reduction in damage to machines.

"We have an excellent partnership with Styropack. In addition to putting considerable effort into the development and testing of these skinned moulds, they continue to respond quickly to our packaging needs including a JIT system and they also hold stock on our behalf" adds Collins.

The washing machines are transported all over the Hoover plant in their packaging. The extra skin prevents the EPS foam from being damaged throughout the production process. In turn, the packaging protects the Hoover washing machines — ensuring that each one arrives at the customer's house in the pristine condition expected of the Hoover brand.
