Environmental Management Systems
Since 1996, ISO 14001 has provided an internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems (EMS).
Organisations sign up to ISO 14001 for three reasons:
 Cost savings from efficiency gains
Competitive trade advantages
Improved environmental performance.
As registrations to ISO 14001 increase, its influence is being felt across the UK manufacturing sector. Leading companies like Volvo and Siemens require that their suppliers are registered to ISO 14001.
SMMT, the trade association for the UK motor industry states: "Management of the supply chain has become a major issue for the majority of vehicle manufacturers. They work hard to ensure their own environmental performance and compliance with environmental requirements and they cannot afford for their supply chain to be broken by suppliers risking noncompliance.
 Increasing numbers of manufacturers are signing up for ISO 14001 and the impact of this is trickling down the supply chain. Dr Mercia Gick, British Plastics Federation (BPF) comments: "The BPF encourages its members to register, it shows the company has a commitment to saving energy and waste.
"And, as importantly, many major OEMs are starting to demand it of their suppliers. A company that is already registered for ISO 14001 can win competitive advantage."
