During the Christmas Panto season, theatres up and down the country find the versatile and lightweight nature of expanded polystyrene (EPS) a vital ingredient for making fantasy costumes and scenery.

At the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff, Roald Dahl's classic James and the Giant Peach was brought to life with the help of EPS to create the enormous peach. At a huge 3.5 metres tall and 3.5 metres wide it dominated the stage.

At the Royal Shakespeare Company's Alice in Wonderland, expanded polystyrene is used to make a perfect Humpty Dumpty costume.

Although the excellent insulation properties of the material make it a hot experience for the actor, Martyn Ellis, who jokes he'll be a boiled egg before the end of the run.
