Lectern demonstrates versatility of recycled plastics

A lectern made of recycled expanded polystyrene packaging (EPS) was made especially for the ‘Recycled Plastics: Are You Missing Out?’ Conference on 6 March 2000.

The speakers at this extremely successful event including the Environment Minister, Michael Meacher MP, used the lectern to put their speaking notes on.

“We are really grateful to Highwood Consultants for donating this lectern for the seminar, it is a solid example of the imaginative uses that can be made of recycled plastics” said Andrew Barnetson, Environmental Affairs Manager of the Expanded Polystyrene Packaging Group.

Highwood Consultants is a family-owned firm based on the Isle of Wight. The company invented the process of converting polystyrene into a replacement wood which is maintenance-free and can be nailed, screwed or sawn just like wood.

Synthetic wood is itself 100 per cent recyclable. A viable and realistic alternative to hardwood, it makes a contribution to the reduction in deforestation of hardwood forests and it offers a good alternative to landfill as a means of disposal of polystyrene waste
