Expanded Polystyrene Packaging: a fisherman's friend

The Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Group was delighted to discover that not only do expanded polystyrene fish boxes provide the best protection and thermal insulation — one recently saved a fisherman’s life.

fisherman clings to epsA fisherman stayed afloat in the sea after his boat sunk off the Dorset coast in July using an expanded polystyrene fish box. Desmond Denny, a 54-year old father of four said: “I was about five miles from shore and I had no lifejacket on. Then I saw the box. I grabbed the box and clung on to it, trying to keep afloat.”

A passing pleasure cruiser rescued Mr Denny. His wife Lesley said: “It is just amazing, that he managed to survive by hanging onto a fish box.”

“This unique use of expanded polystyrene illustrates the versatility of this plastic packaging material” comments Hugh Smith, Chairman of the EPS Group. “We congratulate Mr Denny on his narrow escape and hope that he’ll be using fish boxes for their more customary purpose again soon.”

Mr Denny has kept the box as a memento.
